New York State --- but an answer from any state would be fine

John has been accused of a crime. john denies the charges but is taken to trial and convicted. john gets sent to prison for this crime.

Matthew, who was not part of the trial has an attorney. matthew confesses to the crime that john was charged with. does matthew's attorney have an obligation to let the courts know that matthew has confessed to a crime that john was charged with?

thank you
