This is going to be a bit long winded but I need to include some history.

About 2 months ago I moved to Oklahoma from California. My husband is on active duty in the Navy and in boot camp right now. My California registration has expired and I got pulled over by a police officer in Oklahoma City. Since I had been employed in OK for less than 30 days I hadn't registered my vehicle yet in OK. When the officer pulled me over he looked up my vehicle in his computer and asked me how long I'd lived in OK. I told him that I'd lived here for around two months and had worked here for less than 30 days. He said that I only had 20 days after starting employment to register my car. He than told me that his computer said that my vehicle had been registered in OK in 1999 because the California DMV had my Oklahoma address. I told him that I bought it in CA in '99 and had registered it there. I had put in a change of address and the DMV probably got my new address that way. He basically told me that he was going to write me the citations anyway and I had to just work it out with the judge. He wrote me one citation for speeding, one for expired OK tags, and one for not having an OK driver's license since he thought that my car had been registered in OK for a year. I have gotten the Dept. of Transportation to send me a letter stating that my vehicle has never been in the OK database therefore nullifying my need for an OK driver's license at the time.

I've been told conflicting things. One person said that the requirement is to get a driver's license in OK 3 days after beginning employment. Someone else told me that since I'm married to someone on active duty in the military that I don't need to get an OK license I just have to keep my CA license updated.

I am going to get my car registered in OK, does that mean that I will need to get an OK license whether or not my husband is in the military (my CA license is valid until 2001)? Another glitch in this is that my wallet was stolen on my way to OK so I've got an Oklahoma ID but have yet to get a new CA license with my picture.

I just basically want to know what I need when I go to traffic court and what I need to do to take care of this.

Thanks in advance for any and all help that I get with this situation.

I am a law school graduate. What I offer is mere information, not to be construed as forming an attorney client relationship.

Well, you need to talk to a military attorney to see what the deal is. Ask your guy's active officer to refer you to the lawyer. He/she will know if there are special circumstances for a military wife and what specific registration laws apply in Oklahoma. Also, do a yahoo.com search for Oklahoma Department of Motor Vehicles and it will bring up the site and do a search in there for the rules.
