What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? MD

If a hearing is scheduled for contempt and show cause, do I have to go? I have not been notified, but noticed the posting to my case. My case is handled by the CSEA.

Also, I thought for custody cases you could not get a public defender, is this not true for CS?

Thank you for responses.

who is the contempt/showcause against and what is it for? if its for you, then yes you have to go.

what my lawyer told me is that they reserve PDs for those who cant afford a lawyer, and mostly for criminal cases.

the contempt and show cause is not for me, it is for my ex.

Ok, well I am assuming its for child support. You are not required to go if it was filed by OCSE, but you really should go, because they file it on your behalf for nonpayment of support.

Call OCSE and request to speak with the case worker to see if he/needs you. But I would suggest you go to the hearing anyway.

And contempt is a criminal charge so your ex would be entitled to a PD if he can't afford his own lawyer...
