What is the name of your state? NJ
My husband moved out 6 weeks ago and we now have a temporary court order for custody and visitation. We have joint legal custody and I have residential custody.
Throughout our marriage I was the record keeper, so all of our joint 'records' have remained in my hands since he left.
His family recently has been trying to get copies of the kids SS cards for some reason. I do not trust them, plus I am uneasy with photocopies of my children's SS cards being anywhere in this day and age. What do you need a copy of an SS card for anyway? The kids are only 3 yo and 5 months old.
I know I cannot keep my children's SS#s from their father, but the govt doesn't issue copies b/c you are going through a divorce. Someone has to have possession of the cards until the children are old enough to be responsible for them, and right now, its me. I jotted them down on a piece of paper and offered them to him. He refused them and says 'don't be surprised if you get a summons'.
Am I obligated to give him a photo copy of their SS cards?

Thanks for your advice.

If you are ordered to by the court, then yes. At this point though, I'd say you are not obligated to turn over the SS Cards or copies thereof.
Find out what the reason is...then maybe you can make a more informed decision.

I have a sneaking suspicion of the reason, considering the fact that its tax season. Many preparers would require at least a photocopy of the cards.

In any case...don't release anything unless ordered to do so by the judge.

Thanks, Zigner. When asked by my stb ex's family, the excuse was always to open a bank account or something similar. I told his mother I would meet her at the bank to provide the info but then later my stb ex called demanding copies and threatening with summonses and such.

Thanks, Ldij. I think you helped me out on the tax issue previously, stating that the party with the higher AGI will get to claim the kids. That would be me! So if wants to go ahead and claim, an audit is going to a lot more painful for him than it is for me!
As I said, I did offer him the numbers, b/c he IS their father, but I just don't want a photocopy floating around.
Plus I think these fools might be trying to get passports!
