What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? Illinois

My ex-husband recently served me with a Motion to Modify Child Support. I have responded to that Motion however, I would like to counter it based on arrearage, attorneys fees and numerous other things from 2006 that have not been paid.
Can I counter with a counter-motion or do I have to file a Petition for Rule to Show Cause?
Thank you in advance for your help.

In New York, my state, you would not have to begin an original action like an order to show cause. In your situation, I would file an affirmation in opposition to his motion along with a cross motion asking for the relief you mentioned.;)
