What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? MA

I am a grade school crossing guard. We have recently formed a union.

In the past, some school custodians have gotten extra duties as crossing guards. They get paid extra for this, on top of being paid as custodians.

Is there some law that prohibits this now that we are unionized? They have their own union as custodians. We work for the same school department.

Your union rep should be able to advise...

But, absent something in your contract with the district, I don't see a problem with them having other folks picking up some of the union's slack.

Thanks, I keep asking the union rep, but all he says is "We're trying them out of there."

We're supposed to ratify our contract tomorrow. What happens if we vote not to do so?

You're not even a union yet.

The contract you are voting on contains terms. Presumably, it addresses job descriptions and cross occupational work. In a small district, it does not seem unreasonable custodians be used in this capacity.

I work for a large municipality. Every other worker in the city is unionized and every other worker in the city got a pay raise. We actually had our hours cut. I had a rather heated discussion with my supervisor over the fact that my shift ended just as a school bus was discharging elementary school children a block away. He wanted me to stay for free!

Anyways, our contract was ratified and I'm not happy with it, but c'est la vie.
