i live in California and i have joint custody of my 3 year old daughter. the mother and i (never married) have a court ordered schedule in which we both share our daughter exactly fifty percent of the physical time. we have a court ordered child support in which i pay $144 a month. this amount was determined based on our income and cost of living.
and now the mother of my daughter has stoped working with the exeption of two nights a week as a waitress and has become verbally hostile in reguards to the support that she does receive. recently, she started receiving financial support from the state via food stamps and subsidized housing. My concern is that she will take this a step further and quit her job in order to increase the amount of child support she recieves from me. my question is:
should this happen, can i be awarded more custody rather than paying more child support?

in addition, the mother increasingly slanders me, verbally to my daughter. i realize that this is more a personal matter, but does that have any merit in a court of law? Any ideas on how i can deal with this myself?

Her quiting her job should have no impact on the CS as it has been HER decision to quit. If there is no reason why she can not work, then she has no claim to more CS. Also, you can counter the claim by asking for more time with the child so as to reduce her financial burden.

As regards to all your other issues, document everything and collect whatever proof you can. Then haul her ass into court for a custody modification.
