What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? California. Was wondering if anyone might have some answers. My son was diagnosed with specific learning disabilities since he was in the 1st grade. He is now 21 , i went through all the IEP meetings , year after year. Remind you never changing school districts. There wasn't a teacher that was able to teach my son how to spell or read a 3 letter word. Then he got into trouble and was sent to juvenile hall. It was there in the 7th grade a teacher was finally able to do something for my son that the public school he went to couldn't and that was to read and write. I have read that children with learning disabilities are at greater risk of getting into trouble with the law. Anyway my son is now 21 and has spent a lot of time away from me in and out of placement and so on. Now he is in a California state prison, which i'm sure the state will try to keep him in the system. Maybe i'm just making up excuses for him but i feel had there had been teachers qualified to teach him with his specific learning disability , maybe he would have liked school , maybe he would have wanted to go. This wasn't the case he felt like he was stupid, in his own words mommy i hate school i'm to stupid to learn anything , i don't know how to do any of that stuff. Breaks my heart all over again to think about how he was feeling about his self year after year. Was it something i did or didn't do? Well back to my original question while my son was going through criminal prosecution were there any rights for him as an individual with learning disabilities? and if so i'm sure they were overlooked. any comment from anyone would be appriciated. Thanks Davids Mom

He had the right to have his parents do everything they could, including educate him themselves so that he could be a productive member of society. That you didn't do that and he's now a criminal, it's not the time to decide that everyone except you wronged him.

As parents, it is OUR responsibility ultimately to educate our children. People who leave it solely up to teachers, doctors or the people down the street are simply asking for trouble, and your son found it.

To sum it up: Your child has a learning disability. Your child is a criminal.

Tell me again how this is the SCHOOL'S fault...?

If you felt at the time that the school was not paying attention to his special needs, you could have put him in a different school or home schooled him.
