What is the name of your state? MA

What happens to the debt of someone who commits suicide? The person is 24 years old and has parents living in NJ. The major debt is about $17,000 Federal student loans, and about $6,000 to Fleet bank on a person loan. Would this person's parents become responsible for this debt? The person considering suicide has no real assets, maybe a few hundred dollars in savings, about $800 saved in a 401K, and a car.

Thanks for any info!

Let me get this straight....Your friend is on the verge of suicide and you are worried about the validity of a debt if your friend dies? If it were my friend, I would be doing everything I can to keep my friend from taking their own life.

To answer your question, Federal Student Loans are cancelled if the borrower dies. The Fed cannot make a claim on the estate. However, I believe Fleet bank might be able make a claim on your friend's estate. I'm sure someone a little more knowledgeable will be able to answer that for sure.

But most importantly, get counseling or some kind of help for your friend. A debt is only dollars and cents; life is priceless!

Sounds to me like this person isn't talking about a "friend" but themselves!

Is this correct blazon33? I hope you aren't considering such a thing! I find it odd that who would being held liable for this debt is the focus of your concern here. How about how those parents would feel in having to deal with the loss of their child?!
I am sure things are difficult in life especially to make you consider such a thing but think about those who love you... and please get some help!!

My father attempted suicide this year.. it is an awful thing...it seems so selfish to do something like that. JUST DON"T DO IT!!

Please feel free to email me if you want to talk...I'd like to help if I can!!!!
