What is the name of your state? TN

My husband passed away in 2003. I was applying for a mortgage recently and discovered I had a Capital One card on my credit bureau reports I had never seen before. The card was taken out by my husband the year before he died and now has approximately 6K on it with fees and interest. I never signed for this account and my name does not appear on it.

I first called Capital One and disputed ownership of the account. They acknowledged my name was not on it and I was not responsible for it. However, I have now received a letter from a collection agency that deals exclusively with collecting from estates and they are demanding payment. My husband had no estate. We barely had enough for his funeral.

I also sent dispute letters to the credit bureaus requesting the account be removed from my reports. I indicated it was my deceased spouse's account and I did not co-sign.

Should I be worried? Thanks.

Don't ever talk to those people again.

You will be getting phone calls and letters for a couple of years, but do not talk to them and do not answer any letters.
