Defendant sent answer to my complain in plain/regular mail

I filed a civil complain against Joe, then his attorney send the answer to me in regular mail.

I think it's violating the law, what can I do to take advantage of this?

The purpose of any law is to make sure that you receive the answer. Even if there is some technical violation, this is a "no harm, no foul" situation. You received the answer. All is good.

Rule 1A-1.5(b)(2) if the NC General Statutes. Once the suit is in play, things that are required to be served can either be delivered to you or mailed.

The process for the answer is that the answer is filed with the court and a copy gets mailed to you. There is no violation of the rules that I can see from the few facts you provided.

The defendant is not responsible for any problems the USPS had in delivering the mail to you.
