What is the name of your state?IL
Is it appropriate for an attorney who is representing myself to leave a deposition early, leaving a witness to be examined by 6 defense attorneys? His apparent departure was due to one of his children's involvement in a sports activity.

If you let this lawyer walk out the door in such circumstances, then yes it is appropriate.

If you did not follow the lawyer out the door, then your judgment is bad.

By the way, this lawyer is pretty stupid.

I was not present at the deposition. The individual being deposed actually informed me. Is this something that should be reported to the bar?

did the attorney represent the witness being questioned or does he represent you? What relation do you have to the witness?

This was a witness on my behalf. (A previous partner in the corporation that did work on my residence - and caused over 175K in property damages). He was testifying to the bad character and poor business practices of his previous partner, and he was not represented by councel.

If you are saying your lawyer walked out of deposition, then you need a change of lawyer and you need to file an ethics complaint.

If the witness testified to what your attorney felt he needed to hear, then your attorney may have felt there was no further need to stay.

I have had an attorney leave a deposition when all their client is concerned about is liability and not injuries. On more than one occasion. So when liability questions have already been asked and the remaining attorneys agree no further liability questions are going to be asked those attorneys leave the deposition.
