What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? MD

My fiancé and I were leaving a casino each with a milkshake purchased from Bobby Burger. We were allowed entrance with this milkshake (it's from outside the casino Bobbys is not part of the casino).

A security staff member refused to allow us to leave the casino because of the milkshake. We were told because it may contain alcohol. The choice was to be detained at the casino or our milkshakes seized by the casino.

My fiancé (whom is African American) and do not understand why we suspected of carrying an alcoholic milkshake beverage purchased outside the casino. We were given a choice of detainment or property seizure.

Were any civil liberties violated here?

No. They were not.

There is no such thing as a "state run" casino in Maryland (I'm not sure I know of any anywhere).

I assume you are talking about Maryland Live! (only one that I know of in that has a Bobby's Burger Palace adjacent).

There's no constitutional issue here. Holding a milkshake doesn't put you in a protected class. At the best you have a claim for the value of what remained of the confiscated milkshake. Perhaps if you write the casino, they will compensate you for that. You might also write Bobby's. I don't know if they are operated by the same organization as the casino itself, but they are at least a tenant of the facility and may be interested in helping you.

But other than that, you're probably out of luck. The state gives casinos a pretty broad hand on enforcing security issues. But you can try complaining to the state gaming control agency if that floats your boat.
