I resigned from a salaried position in May. Unbeknownst to me the company continued to direct deposit a check every two weeks for a total of four pay checks. I discovered the error on July 25 but could not contact the company until July 28. Meanwhile I received a demeans repayment letter from them on Wednesday evening July 26. On July 28 I discovered the payroll company had issues reversals of all 4 deposits without notifying me if the intent. Company said it was a "simple" error. I don't dispute paying them. They got 6grans before I was able to stop payments on the other two. I thought a originator if deposit had 5 banking days to reverse deposit snd that they were to notify the employee. Their first error was early June and every two weeks thereafter. I have lost about 10 hours of work trying to manage their sloppy accounting. I don't want money not earned but I don't think I should have a loss of income related to this. Please comment. Payroll company is contracted by a company in Alabama. I worked at one of their companies in Missouri.

I am confused. What do you mean by "loss of income"? Are they trying to take more than they gave you in error? How much did they give you in error?

Were you under the impression that if they took too long to reverse it that the money became yours and so you spent the money and now you don't have enough to return to them?

So how much do you attribute to your sloppy accounting? It took you two months to realize they were still paying you. If you had reasonable accounting practices the errant payments wouldn't have been unbeknownst to you. The pot calling the kettle black doesn't better your position.

From what I can find they do have only 5 days to reverse a payment but since they did somehow reverse the payments well after the 5 day period, there is obviously something that allows it otherwise your bank and their bank would not have allowed the reversal.

So, the question is;

Why do you have issue with them reclaiming their money?

If you didn't earn the money and it was deposited in error, I am at a loss to understand where you have any lost income. If they reversed only what was paid in error (regardless of whether they did so correctly or not) then you should be no worse off than if they never made the mistake in the first place.

And speaking of sloppy accounting, how did you manage not to notice for two months that you had more money than you should?
