What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? Illinois....My boyfriend owns a small bar business in Illinois and is a Direct TV subscriber. On Monday, 2/1/10, he received a letter from a law firm in New York who represents Direct TV stating that the establishment showed "unauthorized exhibition of NFL Sunday Ticket...and have 7 days in which to respond"; which the following day we contacted via phone. The information that he was given via this conversation was that "a person either hooked up a different box and/or used a card with this Sunday Ticket Game to view this on this date, and, they recorded this misuse via some type of recording device, be it cell phone video or what have you. We have 2 TV's in the establishment which are viewed. On 11/26/09, a patron attempted to use the remote to turn on the TV and as an end result, disabled our Direct TV, so we were without any TV until the following Monday, 12/2/09, when the Direct TV technicians arrived and replaced the boxes, which the tech's deemed as defective and replaced them with new units. He has verification from both employees that no one replaced or installed satellite boxes on this day. The NY law firm states there could be a fine up to $12,000 and more if it goes to litigation. How does he proceed to protect his rights and his business? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
