I am in debt with several credit cards and a student loan. I was injured at work and am temporarily totally disabled. I did have excellant credit, but now that so many are past due the collection agencies are calling all of the time. I sent certified letters stating that I was not working and to please stop calling as it was making my health worse. One or two sent a letter saying they would stop; the rest still call. How long will this go on? I guess I am basically ignoring it all at this point, since I only receive workers comp and that could end anyday. Will they usually sue you? The most on a few of the cards is 10,000. The rest are small, and the student loan is 14,000. Is bankruptcy for me, since I really can't pay anything? Will they continue even if I am unemployed indefinitely? Sallie Mae keeps warning of default; what is so terrible, and is it worse to ignore it? I am able to make my mortgage and car payment for now, as a family member is willing to help with this. Is is likely than any of these companies will sue to take my house or car? I don't have much equity in either. I am a single parent, so this was my only income;do they consider this? If I am able to do some sort of work in the future, probably only part time, will they come after me then? If I get a small workers comp or discrimination settlement (eeoc), can they take either of those? thanks for any help, it's nerve-wracking to worry about all of this.
