I know when you want to discharge yourself from hospital you have to sign a form so the hospital is not held responsible, but can you just walk out of hospital without signing the self-discharge form? If you don't, what happens?

You are considered discharged AMA and your insurance very likely will not cover the hospital stay. If you are a psych patient who is being held for observation or transfer to a secure facility then they go looking.

They are going looking for you, psych patient or not.

Insurance will not pay for the hospitalization; the patient will be 100% responsible for the bill.

Most likely, non-life-threatening emergency admissions and treatment will be denied in the future by the hospital and the physicans.

Not a good thing to do. Not at all.

If you are having that much of a problem while you are hospitalized, call an attorney from your hospital bed and ask the attorney to come at your assistance. You may also demand to see the hospital's attorney if you believe you can gain some measure of satisfaction by doing so. You may also call the hospital administrator from your hospital bed and demand he/she come to you or you will have an attorney intervene on your behalf.

What is the reason that one would want to discharge themselves without the hospital approving the discharge? It can't take that long for paperwork to be done.
