What is the name of your state? MI
My husband is black and was accused of stealing a CD by the management of Meijer calling the police on him. He did not steal anything, infact, he is a fireman who was working the night shift who stopped in to return bottles and look for a movie, which they did not have. He was followed through the store and approached twice. Upon leaving he was met by 2 police cars who told him that they were called because they thought he took a cd, but no one saw him. The cops told him that there was nothing they could do unless someone saw him take something. The manager came out to met the police and said that he did not trip the alarm. Meijer admitted that they were in error and want to settle with us, but I'm not sure what to do. They gave us a $150 gift card, but risk management wants to know what it is we want. They said it is not racially motivated, but we feel it is because it was in Northville (a prodimently white area) and this was at 2:00 a.m. in the morning, what do you think we should do.

And what does his being black have to do with the price of tea in Boston?

And you know this because you were there right?
He was followed through the store and approached twice.
Approached? By hookers, hari Krishna? by whom?

YOU do nothing. You have no dog in this fight.

Oh get over yourselves. Just because he's black doesn't mean diddley. Do you have about $20,000 to START such a case? Do you have about two years to devote to such a case?

I'd say accept the apology and the gift card, and get on with it. Chances are that they did not have to do even that much. One can make an accusation of theft against him and be wrong, and still be perfectly within the law.

Don't dwell on this.
