My immigrant friend who married an American citizen just had his interview for his green card. He received a stamp on his passport stating he was now a permanent resident of the U.S. and they told him his passport could serve as his green card until he received the actual green card. His problem...he wants to leave his wife and get a divorce. There is a history of her abusing him and she has a police record. Will he lose his green card if he files for divorce? Is the green card he will receive a "conditional" one? I read something on the message boards that they have to stay together for another 2 years and 90 days before the 2 years are up they have to file something to lift the "conditional" thing. He lives in NJ.

Yep.. the stamp is the I551 which makes them a conditional PR.. in two years he applies to have the conditional removed. If he divorces now, chances are he will have to leave at that point.

Well, of course I had to post my first message before I had all my facts straight. I forgot to mention that he was married to her for over two years, and, according to him, he never received a conditional green card in the beginning, maybe because he had a work authorization visa that he renewed every year. He said that because the two years have already passed he won't have to deal with this conditional thing. But still, can he expect any problems if he chooses to divorce her now(he hasn't received the actual card, he only has the stamp on his passport)? Thanks in advance.
