My question concerns divorce law in the state of Alabama. My in-laws divorced approximately 20 years ago give or take a year. My father-in-law is a federal employee and still works for the same institution he did when he and my mother-in-law divorced. He began working there sometime early in their marriage. According to my husband and mother-in-law, my father-in-law failed to follow through with many of the agreements of their divorce related to child support. Mother-in-law could not afford the legal costs to pursue the matter and let them go.
Now, my father-in-law, who remarried in 1996, is planning to retire in 2002. My mother-in-law wants to know if she is eligible to receive a portion of his pension and if so what steps are involved in receiving her due benefit.
Does anyone have any knowledge of or advice on such a matter?
Thanks,
Daughter D.
