Divorce or Property Settlement FIRST?

What is the name of your state? Virginia

I am going to file divorce after my husband goes to jail.I HAVE to do this myself as I cannot afford an attorney (sad but true) and legal aid wont help.I know Virginia law states anyone that is convicted of a felony and/or is incarcerated a year or more is grounds for divorce. My question is we also own property. One attorney told me that I should file a property settlement first, however I just don't want to be responsible for his debts, and want out of the marriage.I plan on going back to the marital home after he is locked up.He has destroyed the property, and that will take a lawyer as he won't sign willingly.Even though he was convicted of abuse and all that, wouldn't you suggest filing for divorce as a no fault, or on the grounds he is a felon and/or in jail?
Big question......if I file for divorce for one thing, can I do the property settlement on something totally different, and bring out the allegations of abuse, and anything I did not mention in divorce, or should I allegate the same things in divorce when I file?
hmmmmmmmmmm.................
