What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? Louisiana
I found this position for collections in the paper for an addiction and wellness company. The interview process from beginning to end was about 3 weeks.
On my first interview I was interviewed by two women. I called about a week later to see if I was still a prospect for the job position and the main lady that did the talking at the interview said that I would be called in for a second interview because "she wanted a second opinion". Well, there was already another lady at the interview.

\When I arrive to the second interview I \was brought into a dim lit office. I sat in one of the chairs and the lady who was interviewing me, (the executive director) sat in the chair across from me. She proceeded to tell me she was not interested in my work history or resume but getting to know me.
She got me to open up about very personal things such as why I left my last job, (domestic violence) and only having my child on the weekends.
At the beginning of the interview she was sort of like, if you don't get this job, don't give up. At the end of the interview she said "We are like a family here at **** and you would make a good fit". She also elaborated about which one of the ladies out of the two that interviewed me I would get along better with.
Skip past another week. I am unsure if I called or if the main lady that interviewed me did, but she setup a time for a drug test. I did not write down the time of the drug test as I was driving, but I was convinced that it was Tuesday. -Before the drug test I emailed the main lady and tried to confirm whether it was Monday or Tuesday. When I got no response, I went with my gut instinct and went Tuesday.
After the drug test I was sitting in the lobby with the receptionist. The executive director was walking out the door and said. "Its good to see you, I want to welcome you aboard". I said, I have not been officially told yet by the other lady that I have been hired. She said, "That's strange, I thought you already started.
Keep in mind this was the executive director that did the dim lit interview.
I went home and called the other lady who did the original interview. She told me that there was another candidate and she could not confirm that I was officially hired. That my drug test was still pending also.
She led me to believe I would hear something within a few days and it would be positive.
I had already been told by the executive director I was hired, so I stayed under the assumption that I would be hired.
This was over a 3 week process. 2 interviews and a drug test and background check.
I never heard anything from them at all, so all the effort I had put into this company had been crushed. It completely made me lose my enthusiasm for my job search.
I recently wrote the director asking why I could not even get a letter of condolence and this is one of the things that she had to say.
I feel certain there are many personal qualities you could bring to the position as well as professional skills - it was merely a matter of us not feeling that either final candidate was quite the right fit.
I really feel that this executive director crossed boundaries that were unprofessional and misleading. Her words and conduct got my hopes up to the point that I was depressed after the process was over. It was only over in my mind when I finally reached out and contacted her.
So anyway, do I have grounds for pain and suffering or unethical practices? I don't know exactly.

You don't get pain and suffering damages because you didn't get hired for a job.

Perhaps some of their procedures might be unethical, but nothing was ILLEGAL and you have no claim.

The bolded and underlined is just ...bizarre. Odd. Nuts.

No, you do not have a case for anything at all. I'm not even certain I'd consider that anything unethical occurred; a mistake as to whether you'd been hired might - *might* - fall under unprofessional but not unethical. And you're so far from having a case for pain and suffering that you can't see P & S with a telescope from where you're standing.

You better get used to being turned down for jobs because this won't be the last time this happens in your life. Why in the world would you think you were owed a letter of condolence from these people? That's the silliest thing I've ever heard.

Goes back to what I'm always saying. People genuinely believe they have a lot more rights and privileges and such in today's workplace. Not until things actually happen to them do they get a clue just how little there is in regard to what an employer can and cannot do.
