What is the name of your state? Reside in Nevada, Divorce granted in New York.

What are the generally accepted tests for alimony (spousal support)?

I've seen things written that the considerations include: length of the marriage, ability of either spouse to enter or re-enter the workforce, offspring, financial situation of either spouse, etc.

All this is leading up to my question; does alimony last forever?

If not, what steps should/must be taken that have it adjusted or eliminated?

yes, sometimes alimony can last forever.

cant answer your second question, too many factors need to be considered.

Sometimes it can be as simple as length of marriage...

I was awarded *Lifetime* alimony because DE law allows it for marriages over 20 years in length and I was married over 22 years.
