What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? Ohio
So, some people may remember seeing my topic about my roommate in the Small Claims court section, but considering that extortion is a felony, I figured I would ask this in the criminal law and procedure section. Apologies in advance if a mod needs to move the thread.
Anyway, so, I had this roommate, that refused to pay rent. But, because he said, "Either you pay the rent, or you get evicted," despite the fact that we had a verbal agreement to split the bills evenly, is that extortion? I read the law in Ohio, and, encompassed under the threats that constitute extortion, there is a mention that the person in question cannot threaten to damage your credit. And by that, I take that to mean my credit score, and could possibly refer to threatening me with eviction. Because he has gained a total of $3,500, probably more, through threatening me with eviction.
I would have to check my phone to see if I had any text messages that say anything to that effect, but does this apply? Or is the damage to credit referring to something else?
For reference, here is a link to the law that I am reading:
http://codes.ohio.gov/orc/2905.11
It's just something I'd like to know, in case I wanted to press charges for what he did. Because, he's scammed other people before, and I have reason to believe that he was lying about not having enough money to pay his portion of the rent, and I don't want him to do this to someone else.
