Just got the news my step-father was put in jail for DV charges after the neighbors witnessed him attempting to strangle my mother.

Obviously, we are hiring an attorney for her, but it's late. There is an emergency no contact order in place.

What can we (her children) expect to help her with now that she has finally gotten away? This has been a long time coming.

From a legal standpoint, the first thing that comes to mind is that she'll need to cooperate fully with the prosecutor and testify at her husband's trial. This is a difficult step for many victims of DV to take. She may also wish to initiate divorce proceedings, so assist her in retaining a good attorney.

Otherwise, she'll need counseling and support, resources which should be available in her community.
