LOUSIANA LAW Our son got a DUI in NEW ORLEANS . We paid a lawyer who had many years experience a lot of dollars to get the
sentence lowered. If you get a DUI in NEW ORLEANS if at all possible get a lawyer . Just a little good advice.

You wouldn't have had to pay all that money if your son hadn't been stupid enough to drink and drive.

Bet you're paying a lot more for his car insurance.

Better advice.

Don't drink and drive.

I agree that recommending someone get an attorney to help with their DUI charge is good advice. But the advice does not only apply to DUIs in New Orleans.

Whenever anyone ANYWHERE is arrested and charged with a DUI, it is smart to hire a criminal defense attorney.

An attorney cannot guarantee a DUI charge will be dismissed or reduced or any penalties lightened, but having an attorney work with you tends to be your best chance of escaping the worst of the penalties available (and the penalties for a conviction on a DUI can be harsh).

That said, I agree even more with adjusterjack. The best advice is to not drive at all if you have been drinking. If you follow that advice, you do not have to worry about hiring a criminal defense attorney.

I hope your son has learned from his experience.

You are right about getting a DUI. As of right now my son is on probation until january 2016. He still has his drivers license. He was a flight
attendent for almost 10 years. They kept him on but he couldnt go into CANADA so they rearranged his trips. However they have a commutor
clause which means you have to get to your home base to start your trip. His home base was CHICAGO and he went up to the 10 allowed
miises in a year. He had to resgn but now he works at TARGET and likes it with no more travelling .

Yes, under most circumstances Canada restricts entry to those in the US who have criminal records. It is an often-unknown or under-considered consequence of violating laws in the US.

It is too bad that your son had to resign (although the resignation makes sense) but I am glad your son seems content with his work at Target. Sometimes it is nice to have a job that does not consume your life (or so I have been told ;)).

I hope the rest of his probation goes smoothly for him. Thanks for filling us in, gusord.

There's no reason to get a DUI in New Orleans, you can walk or take the streetcar just about everywhere!

Don't get one in New Hampshire either. The one I was involved with had a fatality. The other driver was 19, drunk and hit our car. One of her passengers was killed.

Whenever we drive by that spot, we see the little roadside memorial.

You better not gamble, and you better not fight.
Cause the sheriff will grab you, and his boys will take you down.
And before you know it, you'll be prison bound.

How about, don't drink and drive, period? Then no one will have to worry about getting a DUI anywhere.

... And before you know it, you'll be prison bound.

With DUIs, Credence Clearwater's "you'll be prison bound" might be optimistic. How about Green Day's "DUI:"

"... Careful when I'm taking this next corner
Don't want anybody wasting beer
Pass another lime and Corona
Too drunk to use my clutch when shifting gear ...

... Let's get drunk and go out driving
Let's do prodies in the cul de sac
Let's get drunk and go out driving
We're going and we're never coming back ..."

I have seen far too many roadside memorials, the response to deaths due to drunk driving.
