I received a speeding ticket just today in Queens for speeding. I did 51mph over a 25mph zone. I received an 1180d violation code. My friend says that my license could possibly automatically be suspended for doing double the speed limit. Is this true? Could someone cite this from a source somewhere?

Edit: Sorry, I meant 51mph in a 25mph zone (26mph over)

You are looking at a 6 point violation. I don't know your point history, but if you have points already, suspension is possible, as is driver responsibility assessment.

Your friend is making stuff up, but doubling the speed limit is not going to help you in court.

If you are convicted, you will receive 11 points against your license which means an automatic suspension. (https://dmv.ny.gov/brochure/mv21.pdf - see pages 25 & 26).

You need an attorney.

According to the NY State Driver's Manual, speeding at more than 40 over the speed limit is 11 pts.

ETA: Re-read the OP...He was doing 51mph OVER the posted 25mph. That's 76mph in a 25mph zone.

The poster also says "doing double the speed limit." which would be 50. I put it down to unclear writing. Either way he's facing a ton of points, but if he was doing 76 in a 25, I would be sort of surprised he didn't also get a reckless driving ticket, and if so he should count his blessings on that.

CORRECTION: Sorry, I guess my wording was wrong. I did 51mph in a 25mph zone. So I did 26mph over the limit.

Your interpretation was correct (based on the OP's follow-up post)

My original concern was if there was such thing as being automatically being suspended for doing double the speed limited?

i will repeat my post and add clarity

You are not automatically suspended for doubling the speed limit.

Double the speed limit means nothing, what counts is how far over the posted limit you were traveling.
