Understanding the circumstances surrounding why your employer would consider doing this as a disciplinary measure might help too.
Earned leave = Accrued paid time off. Given to employees as outlined by the company's policy. (When you work, you accrue leave)
Take = Yes actually take days or weeks.
The employer does this for what they consider serious violations in company policy. For example insubordination, being late too many times, not doing the job properly, etc.
