I eloped in England without telling my family and my husband and I are now going to have a real wedding.
I want to apply for a marriage license in Iowa.
Is this ok? Is there any chance of being turned down or found out because we already had a justice of the peace marriage in another country? I would like to keep the previous marriage a secret from my family since they would be very hurt and possibly angry.

My response:

When you go to City Hall to get your marriage license, will you be able to answer the question, UNDER PAIN AND PENALTY OF PERJURY - - "Are you currently married?"

Then, since you can't, talk to the officiate or priest who will be performing the Wedding, explain the situation, and you'll get married - - but there won't be any American Ceritificate of Marriage and it just won't be registered in Iowa. So what ?

Your secret will go to the grave with the officiate, and with you.
