What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? Louisiana

A friend has been having problems with his manager. One of the issues is a back problem that prevents him for standing for hours. It does not prevent him from doing his job, but he was told he could not sit down. He would only sit for a few moments when the store was free of customers.

He spoke with HR and he has received notice that he is to sign a release for his medical records by close of business tomorrow. Is this legal?

If he is requesting an accomodation under the ADA, it may be legal; the employer is entitled to confirmation of the disability. What kind of records is the employer looking for?

My friend was asked to sign for permission to access his medical records by the end of the day tomorrow. It was non specific. I assume the company will have access to everything if this is signed.

The employer absolutely may require medical verification of a disability before they are required to provide an accomodation. Perhaps your friend might like to verify with his HR what records they are looking for.

The employer is restricted to information needed to assess the accommodation requirement for sitting down.
This is a very specific request information only, do not give a blanket access to medical records to the employer.
I'm surprised the employer is not requesting a medical doctor's assessment letter, which provides the basic information needed to do this request.
