What is the name of your state? OR
My wife is a massage therapist and was working as a "contractor" for a spa.
She was supposed to be paid every Monday for work completed the week ending 2 Sundays before - so she was always owed a week, at least.
Every week the owner would pay in cash and often only part of her earnings - it was a 50/50 split. Often he would duck out and not be seen until Wednesday.
My wife got fed up with this and quit. He paid her all but $80 owed for that payday, still owed her a full week plus one day. About $550.
He has not paid her a dime since she left on March 18. He does not respond to any emails or phone calls. Since there are no time cards and the business is all cash we have no way to prove she is owed or how much she is owed. My wife kept a Excel spreadsheetof massages and tips, etc., which she updates nightly. Is this enough?
$550 is a lot of money to us and too much to walk away from.
Any ideas on how we should proceed?

Your wife should contact your State's Department of Labor to see if they can assist her. If not (because she's an independent contractor), then her only option would be to sue which she can do in small claims court.

You also can try the Federal Labor Dept, they can also help. The can help also with the Independent contractor (IC) issue. I do not believe the IC is applicable to your wife...
