What is the name of your state? Virginia

I have 5+ years with my current employer and recently signed a new employment contract upon entering the new fiscal year. The contract specifically quotes salary and commission wages to be paid monthly and was effective 10/01/04.

I was told yesterday that the management has decided that they feel that in hindsight, the wages are too high and that I make too much money under the agreement they made last month. They have decided to take retro-action and withhold wages due from my last 5 weeks of work under the existing contract.

Issues:
1) I was not aware of the changes being made and have not been offered an alternative contract as of yet, so I am still operating under the contract in question. Is the agreement valid until otherwise noted?

2) Can a contract be changed and enforced retro-actively to withhold wages promised in a signed document?

Thank you.

Take a copy of the contract and go see an attorney. Since we don't know the wording of the contract (the whole contract) it's impossible to say whether your employer can make any changes in the terms.
