I was recently terminated from a job and I now need an employment verification letter stating my dates of employment. This is for my financial aid office at my college for aid purposes. My former employer was originally compliant in preparing a letter. I have since filed for unemployment and now that I have filed for unemployment my employer texted me saying that since I filed for unemployment they would no longer be preparing the verification letter. My question is do I have any legal right to request employment verification from a previous employer and what do I need to do to legally request it. This is in Alabama.

I'm going to split a hair here.

You have the legal right to request it - i.e., the law does not prohibit you from making the request.

However, with VERY limited exceptions, the employer has the legal right to decline. The law does not mandate that employers honor requests for employment verification.

The financial aid office will probably (note "probably" - it's up to them, they're not legally required to) accept copies of all your paystubs + an explanation that your former employer doesn't do employment verification letters.

Thank you for your responses. I will see if the financial aid office will be a bit more understanding than my previous employer.

Be sure to tell them you are applying for unemployment. Essentially, you're asking them to disregard your prior income on the basis that you're no longer employed. But they most likely will want to know all sources of current income.

I have filed for unemployment

Because you did this, the UI people will be sending you letters. Those letters when pieced together will pretty much establish the last day you worked, and if you worked there less than 18 months, the wages by quarter will infer about when you started the job.
