I’ve been divorce for seven months now. We have joint custodianship of our school age child. I ‘have’ him every other weekend and all summer. She moved right before the divorce to Massachusetts so I’m only able to get up there about once per month to stay in a hotel and see him. I pay child support on time. We had a contentious divorce but things are settling down now. I would suspect that if she had the opportunity to move the venue for the custody matters from Mississippi to Massachusetts it would benefit her greatly and might work to her advantage if she tried to bring me back into court to get full custody.

She told me recently that she entered into a domestic partnership with her boyfriend. As far as I can tell he’s a pretty nice guy and my son likes him. I’ve never met him, however and based on past experience I don’t think the relationship will last very long, though I’m only speculating.

One of our arguments several months ago was that she wanted me to drop him from my health insurance. She is court ordered to carry health insurance on him. I kept him on too since I have two other dependents and it doesn’t cost extra to include him. Also, he will live in Mississippi all summer and might need healthcare here too. She said that since I wouldn’t drop him she can’t qualify for premium assistance for her own health insurance (she also has a child, my former stepson, from a previous marriage). I couldn’t even find evidence of such a program for individuals on the web, and I think she makes too much anyway, so I think it was an exaggeration. She hasn’t mentioned it in several months so I wonder if she got the domestic partnership so she could get herself and the kids on his health insurance.

Does anyone have any reason to think I should be concerned about this?

Her boyfriend has no effect on your custody agreement with your ex about your child. Even if she were to marry him, it would have no influence whatsoever.

You should get a court-ordered long distance parenting plan in place, instead of the one you have now, which is not workable due to distance.
