What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? Ohio
My ex wife is taking our 14 yr old daughter to get a tattoo. I have read that all they need is for the parent or guardian to be present and sign the waiver form. I have already expressed my view that she is too young to get a tattoo. I said 18 would be a more appropriate age.
Question is, is there anything I can do to stop this? I would really hate for her to get one at a young age and then end up regrettig it. Im not against tattoos, as I have some myself, I just think 14 is to young to make that kind of decision.

Your ex is a moron. I'm going to send a link to this thread to OhioGal (ohio attorney) and see what she thinks.

Ohiogal is going to be the best person to answer this, but I'll try to get some information out of you for her in advance.

Do you have a formal, court ordered custody arrangement? If so, what is the custody situation?

Do you have shared legal custody over your daughter?

If you both have shared legal custody, then short of a court order or injunction, you may not have any legal means of preventing this from happening.

I would tend to agree that 14 is too young to make a decision that could effect her for the rest of her life - particularly if the tattoo is in a place where it can be seen when wearing even summer clothing. But, this is just one problem that can occur when mom and dad do not share the same thoughts on child rearing.

Mom is the custodial parent. Im going contact the tatto shop that I think they are going to. I know the owner personally, so im hoping that will help. But not totally sure if that is the shop they will go to.
While I agree my ex is a moron, im trying to keep my personal feelings about her out of my posts.

She may be the custodial parent, but that does NOT man that you have no legal rights here.

If you have an attorney involved in the custody and visitation side of things, you might want to make a phone call to him or her to see if you have any options here.

I had no attorney.
I contacted the tattoo shop I figure they will go to, since its 2 blocks from her work. I talked to the owner, which is a friend of mine. He said he wouldn't tattoo her or allow anyone in his shop to tattoo her.

Legally, however, mom can get her a tattooed. The youngest person who was ever taken to a tattoo shop according to lectures I have been to on the very subject was six years old. The shop owner REFUSED to tattoo and reported the parents. However, it is NOT illegal.

A court may put an injunction against mom HOWEVER mom could still get the child tattooed. Then it becomes a case of contempt of court and you suing for custody. But that doesn't change the fact that your daughter is tattooed. The other question is WHAT does she want to have tattooed? As in what does she want on her body?

I figured legally she could do it....
she said a star with wings. This was a pic she designed herself, and I have not seen it myself. I had already explained to my daughter that 14 was way to young to make a decision that will have an impact on the rest of her life.
Luckily....the shop owner told them it was a state law that she had to be 16.
So at least it seems it will be put off for two more yrs.

There is no state law in Ohio stating that you must be 16 to get a tattoo. The only restriction for minors is that parental consent is required.

Yes I know that...that is just what the tattoo artist told them. I think it just might have been easier then simply saying, no im refusing to tattoo a 14 yr old

Ahh. Fair enough then. You should still probably keep an eye on the situation. It's not hard to Google the law, and if Mom and daughter are determined, they'll just go to another shop.

i know this sounds a bit off the wall, dad. but would you consider this, what if you were to offer a temp tattoo that you kept up at your cost for 6 months. or a year. if she keeps the same tattoo for the entire time with no variations and is happy with it, you'll consider it.

it was just a random idea. thought i throw that out there.

A law should exist requiring people to view pictures of just where that tattoo is going to be on your body in 30 years and what it is going to look like.

Well it does not sound like a gang brand/tattoo -- at least not one of the more prominent ones. However, be forewarned tattooing among young people is increasing. There are backyard parties where kids tattoo themselves and, according to gang experts and police, the fastest growing area these kids are starting to tattoo: the whites of their eyes.

No, seriously. The WHITES OF THEIR EYES.

(I spent some time in the last month at a seminar for tattoos, minors and the gang connection to find out THE WHITES OF THEIR EYES is what some teens want tattooed and they try to do it themselves.)
