What is the name of your state? CA
Is there any kind of law that keeps one from asking/finding out what Jane is making vs. what John is making? It's pretty obvious that only the men are getting promoted in my company....and I believe they are the only ones getting raises too.

So what? That, in itself, is not illegal.

And no. There is no law that says you can't find out. Unless you break in to the office and steal the records or look in them during the secretary's lunch.

but there's no law to protect you either when you ask HR for the information and the boss fires you.

If you are asking whether there is any law that requires an employer to reveal other employees salaries when you ask, no, there is not.

If the other employees want you to know, they can tell you when they ask. There IS a law that says you can't be fired for discussing your salaries amongst yourselves IF YOU SO CHOOSE. But no one HAS to tell you, either.

What other employees are making is none of your business unless the employees in question choose to let you know.

There can be many reasons besides gender why one person gets a raise and someone else doesn't. But if you honestly believe that there is a gender-related reason for raises in your company, the way to handle it is to complain to the EEOC, not to get yourself fired trying to get a look at records you have no business seeing.
