What is the name of your state? California

My wife works for a large grocery chain as a book keeper, there is a union she belongs to and they have a clause of 50/50 meaning the stores have to have 50% (at least ) higher hourly wage employees. A memo has recently come down from one of the corporate people about a forced buy out of those higher hourly rate employees and to re-hire at a lower rate. Is this legal? We were wondering if it might be to her best interest to go ahead and take her early retirement before they force her to take what ever they feel like giving her. She does have 20 yrs. with the company at this time. TY

Is it legal? Sure. Is it a violation of the union contract and a matter to grieve? That's something your wife will need to discuss with her local union leadership.

retire or not

thanks for the info. we will take appropriate action. Do you think we would be better off for her to take an early retirment or wait to see what they offer?

a.) I don't have a clue.

b.) That's far too major a decision to make based on an opinion from a stranger at a website.
