Foreclosure cured with NSF check

Recent foreclosure was cured for the amount requested in Foreclosure notice. However, the the reinstatement money was not made out to the successor trustee(attorney) and it was not cash, cashiers check or money order. My attorney said I could go ahead and cash the check. He sent to me I deposited on May 23... I just received a notice of bank return check NSF. Shouldn't my attorney have only accepted a cashiers check or MO made out to his office? Then written me a check. Also he already filed a discontinuance.
I have a call in to him, but wanted to figure out if he had done something wrong before I talk to him.
