What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? NJ

A few years ago, my company made a shipment using a freight broker called Smartshipper. We paid the bill and thought everything was fine. We are now recieving a summons from Central Transport for full payment of the bill. Apparently Smartshipper went bankrupt and never paid thei bill. The trucking company, Central Transport is now suing us for $500 for payment, claiming the shipper is ultimately responsible. We feel that Central transport is a creditor of Smartshipper, and should be compensated by the bankruptcy court. We are located in NJ, so the costs of fighting this in a Michigan court will cost us more than ignoring it. What is the official legal opinion? What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)?
