What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? Virginia

I am currently an OPT with a pending application for H1. What happens if I want to go back to J1 for a postdoc? Will I need to go back to my country to obtain a J1?

Also, what is the usual timing to obtain a J1?

Thank you!

Processing time varies, but it's not too onerous (30 days or so). Yes, it is possible if you find a sponsor for your J-1, you can apply from within the US (provided you've entered legally which you have). I'm confused. Why not do an F-1 for the Post Doc. The J-1 has more stringent requirements.

Thanks for your quick reply. Isn't a F1 only granted to people that are getting a degree (M.Sc or Ph.D.)? I am currently under a F1-OPT waiting to receive a notice for the H1. Also, what stringent regulations are you referring to? Thanks again for your help!
