What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)?

Illinois

I live in a condo and the neighbors live upstairs make a loooooot of noise since the floor is extremely thin. I can even clearly hear their every step, yes, every. And every step sounds like stomping from downstairs.

I talked to the landlord today and he went to the upstairs apt and stepped on the floor, and commented: "They should never make hardwood floors any more. Sorry, but there is nothing we can do."

Moreover, the upstairs neighbors refuse to place any carpets or rugs since they said they preferred wood floor. Though I talked to them yesterday, they still made noises until 2 am.

Gee! Upstairs noise is really torturing me and I began to have a severe headache. What can I do other than subletting the apt and moving out? This is really annoying and is there any applicable condo code:confused: to the tenants and landlords? I rechecked the contract and it only mentioned in the Rules and Regulations Part that "No noise, music or other sounds shall be permitted at any time in such manner as to disturb or annoy other occupants of the Building"

What can I do at this point of time? Thanks a million! What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)?

Talk to you Neighbors

Hi There. I feel for you.

I have a similar issue. The floor/ceiling connection between our units carries a lot of impact noise. I can hear the nails from my neighbors dog. Living in a condo, I understand that I have to deal with some annoyances but I had to draw the line at noise above my bedroom in the middle of the night/early morning. I explained to my neighbors that I can hear everything that makes contact to their floors and would they mind wearing slippers after 10pm. I made this request only for activity in their bedroom. I may not like it when I hear them while I'm in the living room, but I can live with that. I can't live well without any sleep. If they don't get your point, invite them down to your place while you go upstairs to demonstrate the noise you are hearing. All in all, we came to a good compromise. I'll admit that it did get heated until My upstairs neighbor was able to experience the noise for himself while down in my unit. I still have have some problems from time to time but overall they have been fairly accommodating. One half of the couple is a bit resentful so it always gets louder when she is home alone.

Eventually, I would like to get the ceiling soundproofed. I have not yet bid out costs, but it seems like a big project. For more information search for an article entitled: "Soundproofing from loud upstairs neighbors in Condo or Apartment"

Best of luck and try to reach a compromise.
