My mother had a friend who had just given birth. This woman did not care to keep her child since she was in and out of drugs, bad relationships and simply a very unstable life style. The kids father did not care for him much either since “he is not my skin color”, so he said. My mother decided to take the baby into our home and so they went to probate court (in state of Connecticut)where both the mother and father were “removed as guardians of the person of the minor child.” and my mother was appointed as guardian of the person of the minor child. From the moment we got this baby (month and ½ old), I fell head over hills for him and I practically took on the mother role on this baby’s life. Long story short I moved out of my home to another state and shortly after I went back home and with my mother I went to a lawyer where my mother filled out an appointment of standby guardianship form and I proceeded to take the baby with me. My baby is now 6 years old and I would love to legally adopt him. Is this a possibility? I fear filling the paper work and loosing my son since his guardianship rights where legally given to my mother and not me. Would he be taken even from her if court found out he was with me? Is he allowed to be living with me in another state with the appointment of standby guardianship? What can I do, if anything in order to legally keep my baby?
