Green Card

Hi,
I would like to know how the Green Card is processed. I am currently working with a Consultant on H1B. If they apply for my Green Card. Does that mean that i need to stick to them till my Green Card is approved or is there any possibility that i could Shift My Employer even though my previous Employer Sponsored me for Green Card.
Kindly Advise.
