What is the name of your state?Utah. I entered into a rent to own with owner finance option after one year. At that time, I opted to buy. Owner presented papers full of unconscionable clauses designed to allow him to take back home. I refused to sign; we couldn't come to agreement on new papers so we agreed to a 1 year extension of orignal lease. Owner didn't sign new lease; instead, behind my back, transferred ownership to other entity. New owners originally stated that would honor owner finance option until found out I'm on disability. Then they denied knowledge of oral extension of lease, but repeatedly threatened to evict me if I didn't sign over my rights to the house. I refused. I talked to lawyer who told me that even though the lease expired, the terms did not; and that my lease terms were still enforceable. I am going to court Monday and have not been able to find the source of this law to quote in court. WHAT IS THE SOUCE OF THIS LAW? ----After new owners forced me out of my home, they admitted, in writing, that they knew that I had an extension of my lease, so I have proof now that I had a lease-purchase agreement when they took over the property. I have read that: (1) This gave me "exclusive purchase rights" and (2)"right of first refusal"; thus the original owner did not have the right to transfer the property to someone else 'behind my back'. I CANNOT FIND THE LEGAL SOURCES FOR THESE LAWS so I can quote them in court. Because of on disability, I cannot afford an attorney! I've been told that I have a good case for harassment because the landlord forced his way into my home to threaten me; however, I have not been able to find an attorney willing to take my case on a continguency basis. I'm running out of time and getting desperate for help.
