We live in Tennessee. I have a friend whose husband died 7 years ago and they had twin girls age 3 at the time he died. He was abusive to her, but he was good to the twins. She allowed his parents to have them every weekend after he died. She got remarried and moved out of town, but not out of state. The grandparents wouldn't return the girls after a visit, and were nowhere to be found. After finding them, she allowed no more visitation. They had a long court battle, took it all the way to the supreme court, and the grandparents lost. The new husband adopted the girls, and they call him dad. My question, can they come back 5 years later and take it to court? They have recently contacted the current husbands father wanting the girls, and are trying to trick people into getting my friends phone number. I know about the new law concerning grandparents rights, I just want to know if my friend should even be worried. Thank you for any information.

With the history of the grandparents, I would not allow any sort of unsupervised visitation. I'm sure if they took it back to court, they would be laughed right out of there.

I wouldn't worry if but I wouldn't allow the grandparents unsupervised visitation either.

Good luck!

Thank you for your reply. I'll let you know if anything happens. The girls haven't seen the grandparents for over 5 years, and all those weekend visits were without a court order. My friend did it for the girls, and to help them,(grandparents), cope with the loss of their son. They ruined any chance of seeing them ever again by acting the same way they did during the court battle. Thanks again!

Hopefully the girls' school is aware that they should not be released to anyone but one of the parents (or someone appointed by them in case of emergency).

Given the background, they also might be able to get restraining orders. The thought of anyone trying to kidnap children is frightening.
