We bought our first home recently. The sale got seriously delayed. Since we wanted to do renovation for our new home and our lease with the current landlord ended on the end of February, we asked our landlord to let us live in the apartment for another month without renewing the lease. If he wouldn’t, we would still move out by the end of February. Our landlord said it was absolutely fine. So we started to do the renovation for the apartment. However, recently we received the letter from his lawyer. It requested us to renew the lease within 10 days, otherwise our lease would be terminated and the lawyer would start the legal action on us. To deal with that issue we called our landlord again and again, but he has never responded our messages. We called his lawyer. The lawyer’s secretary always told us we must call the landlord even after we told her that we were unable to reach him because he didn’t reply our phones.
Now ten days will pass soon. We are really worried about that. What should we do? If the lawyer terminates our lease, can we argue for that and still stay in the apartment on the end of March? What would happen under such situation? Will any legal action affect our credit? If we have to move out early because we were evicted by his lawyer, can our landlord still charge us the whole March’s rent just by saying that we had an agreement with him to stay till the end of March? I will really appreciate any legal suggestions. Thanks.
