I understand that a paralegal is not allowed to do anything that constitutes giving legal advice, executing legal documents, etc (I'm currently a beginning paralegal student) My question - Can an independent paralegal be hired to only do research based on a given fact situation?

A paralegal (independent or otherwise) works for lawyers.
You can not in all the states I know about hold out to the non-lawyer public for any legal service. In Virginia, you'd have to be very careful indeed. Almost certainly most "research" tasks in the legal field fall either under the legal or security (private investigator) licensing rules.

Hi, thanks for the reply. I don't mean anything along the lines of PI work. I'm only speaking about case law. i.e., I have a case that was cited in a letter, and I'd like to hire a paralegal to research to discover any opposing primary authority, etc. Yes I'm going to school and I will ask my professor today too. By the way, it's you're, not your.
