can a hoa association sue you if you stop paying the fee's and short sale the property?

they could come after you for what you owe up to when the house sells. when the house sells then it because the new owners bill. But lets say that you stop paying now and by the time the house sells you owe $2000.00 in fee's. If the HOA wants to sue you for it they could.
