What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? California

My bio-father passed away in 1998. He was in the music business for many years. I have tried to claim royalties sent to the state, however, they are requesting an original receipt or invoice from the issuing company with my fathers name on it. How do I obtain something like that? Do I need a lawyer to begin receiving my fathers royalties?

He did not have a will or an estate. He did not have anything go into probate. I don't even think he maintained a bank account for many years. What can I do as his only child?

Why do you call him your "bio-father" ??

I have a legal reason for asking the question.

Thanks for replying..... I state he is my bio-father because my mother remarried after she divorced my father, however, I was not legally adopted by my step father. He just raised me. Not sure mentioning he is my bio-father was relevant to my question though. :/

I ask because children who are adopted often refer to their biological parents in that manner. If you had been adopted (you were not), then he would not be your father and you would have no claim.

Now that is straightened out, I'm sure someone who knows will come right along to answer your actual question. :)

Doesn't right-to-inherit survive stepparent adoption?

When you ask that, you already know. :D SO my answer will be, sure, why not? ;)

LOL no, really - I think I've seen it discussed before but I'm not 100% sure either way :p

Regardless it's moot - so I'm going to apologize and slink back to my corner for disrupting the thread :) ;)

Right, I was not adopted, therefore I should be able to claim the royalties. I had previously submitted all documents requested of me, but they came back with that one (receipt or invoice/bank statement). Hopefully someone will come along with an answer.

In the meantime, I did try to make contact with the music companies, but have not heard anything back just yet.

Thanks for your time. If you happen to run across anything related to this, let me know. :)
