What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? NY

It's been almost 12 weeks since I signed papers to be appointed administrator of my aunt's estate. I called the attorney office that's handing it and asked how long it takes and was told "Sometimes it takes a while." Any idea how long it takes once the papers are submitted to the county Surrogate's Court (P.S. it's Saratoga County where my aunt resided)?

In some locales in some states, if you have all the paperwork in order and your timing is right, you can walk out with letters in an hour.

All I can tell you about New York is what I hear: things move slowly.

You could try checking with the Surrogate Court yourself.

Did you think to ask the person with whom you spoke whether or not your petition has ACTUALLY been filed and the date it was filed?

Or ask the person how many “a whiles” can be crowded into three months.

You might call another law office in Saratoga County that does probate work and ask them what you have asked us?

My guess is that you won’t get the same “sometimes” and “a while” business, which to me sounds like a run- around. Meaning some secretary is covering the butt of lazy-ass-lawyer. Not an uncommon affliction.
